The project Coasts of the Future is a co-operation project between actors engaged in costal area development in the Öresund-Kattegat-Skagerrak (ÖKS)-region.

The goal is to contribute to sustainable economic growth in the coast area in the Skagerrack-Kattegatt-Öresund region by conducting interregional development activities. The coastal areas have experienced an extensive industrial change – from traditional enterprises such as fishing boats to tourism. A challenge is to adapt to the change in a way that leads to economic growth, and at the same time preserve environmental, cultural and social values. By comparing the situation in the focused costal areas the project will invent conditions for sustainable development.

The project network consists of actors having competence in coastal development, particularly in terms of tourism, cultural heritage, environmental impacts and events. Following actors are committed to the project: Campus Helsingborg, Lunds universitet; Höganäs kommun; Helsingborgs kommun; Centrum för turism, Handelshögskolan vid Göteborgs universitet; Västsvenska turistrådet; Kungälvs kommun; Saxo Instituttet, Köpenhamn universitet; Vest-Agder fylkeskommune; and Han Herrad Havbåde.

The actors form a competence network that exchange experiences and knowledge on coastal development. By exchanging experiences on different ways of dealing with industrial change the project members can learn from good and bad examples. Actors´ different experiences also promote creativity and cross-boarder innovation. The project will investigate the conditions for thematic coast trails and complementary concepts and services in the Öresund/Kattegat/Skagerak triangle.

The goal is to position the ÖKS coasts as attractive destinations and, thus, increase the competitiveness of the region. The project will during its implementation ensure that the new knowledge and experience will be stored and used after the project deadline. An actor will take responsibility for making the cross-boarder co-operation network permanent, thus ensuring future cross-border cooperation focussed on coastal development.
