Nano Connect Scandinavia is in many ways the result of experience gained from earlier projects such as the Danish network NaNet, and the EU funded initiative Nano Øresund (Interrreg IIIA project) which created a foundation for Danish-Swedish cooperation across the Øresund strait within the field of nanoscience. Nano Connect Scandinavia comprises regions in Denmark, Sweden and Norway, tied together by the strait of Øresund, Kattegat and Skagerrak. This is a dynamic region with two national capitals: Copenhagen and Oslo. It has 34 universities, 24 science parks and incubators, and a total of 9.2 million inhabitants.

The objective of the project is to encourage and facilitate innovation based on knowledge within nanotechnology.

The purpose of this project is to

  • Create partnerships between industry and academy within nanotechnology (and by that more start-ups, more high-tech jobs etc.)
  • Enhance the international knowledge of Øresund/Kattegat as a strong nano region
  • Improve the regional framework where nano ideas and products develop

The regional capacity, within nanotechnology, is massive. The region is one of the five strongest nano research areas in the EU.

The potential of using nanotechnology in industry is gigantic. It is a new way of thinking, a new technique for developing all kinds of products and processes, everything from making electronics smaller to more environmental products and better medicines.

Combining the capacity and the potential, this initiative will have an enormous impact on the regional development.

Focus will be on making industry use the academic competence of nanotechnology. The approach of the project is partly about establishing critical mass within the different nano sub areas by pulling relevant groups of people together, and partly about building robust structures for cooperation by setting up networks where the different players can meet.
