On the basis of the geographically close sites of two major universities both possessing cutting edge profiles within the field of Scandinavian Studies, this project aims to initiate what will become a permanent cooperation between the department of Literature, University of Lund, and the Department of Scandinavian Studies and Linguistics, University of Copenhagen.

The long-term goal is to make the resulting centre into the leading institution worldwide for research and education in Scandinavian Studies, encompassing the fields of language, literature and culture. To achieve this goal also entails establishing connections with researchers in other departments of the universities in question as well as in other universities. Starting with the two originating institutions, the project undertakes to develop the necessary structures that will be solid and flexible enough to make this larger vision real. One of the aims of the project is to develop a strategy for the future course of action in marketing the centre on a global scale, in order to attract Scandinavian as well as non-Scandinavian students and researchers.

The cooperation between the two departments will have effects at all levels of education and research, including the construction of a webpage and e-publication facilities. The project will employ personnel at both institutions in order to explore and facilitate the development of structures that may encourage the dialogue between Danish and Swedish students and researchers, including a thorough investigation into possible current obstacles for increased cooperation across Øresund at the university level.

The project will engage in various activities to further the active cooperation between the two institutions and their populations, including experiments with new courses and seminars at BA and MA levels that will be open to students on both sides of Øresund, the development of a common degree in Scandinavian Studies at MA level, common seminars for Ph.D. students, workshops involving researchers at both universities that will solidify into permanent networks as well as two larger conferences that we intend to make a permanent annual event.
