The purpose of ‘the Sound of Science’ is to strengthen the Øresund Region’s opportunities in taking leadership in the Nordic and European cooperation that hosting MAX IV and the ESS implies. The parties supporting the initiative would like to instigate the theme ‘the Sound of Science’ within the Interreg program, starting immediately and lasting throughout the programs duration. The direct effect of consolidating the potential in the region is to enable the Øresund region to become a leader within material sciences and industrial development globally.

For the initiative to run smoothly a coordinating body, with at structural aim, is required to enhance the capacities around and set strategies for leadership in the Øresund Region. The objective is to engage and create commitment amongst players in the field, in order to jointly define and develop key areas of interest within the theme. Hence, each individual initiative is awarded greater impact and joint together they’ll have the capacity to raise the potential for the entire cross-border region.

The idea for governing ‘the Sound of Science’ has evolved at the Øresund University, in conjunction with various partners. A group consisting of Swedes and Danes has worked together in order to develop the structure, with feedback from different parties in the region. The Øresund University, holding a strong track record for cross-border cooperation, acts as the project manager in close relation with partaking professionals. The project manager will be responsible for the communication, implementation and coordination of the project.

The strenght of the Øresund region lies in enabling knowledge sharing and sharing innovative processes cross-border to further benefit from a critcal mass and also to extend potential markets for commercial goods and services. This project emphazise the additional value that could be achieved by taking leadership internationally within material sciences. We believe that we could create synergies not only between similar activities within ’the Sound of Science’ but also between differing activities where intersections might coincide. By identifying themed areas in the region, mutual needs can be brought forward in smaller projects held together in a greater plan for strategic development. The hosting of ESS will be shared between Sweden and Denmark setting an example of how to make the most of a region standing on the brink to grasp international leadership within material sciences.
